Medium format film photography uses an image area larger than 35mm film and smaller than traditional large-format sheet film. For many photographers, the format begins with 120 roll film, a paper-backed film approximately 6cm wide.

The name “120” refers to the roll-film specification. It does not describe the film’s width or determine the shape of the photograph. The camera defines how much of the roll is used for each exposure, creating formats such as 6 × 4.5, 6 × 6, 6 × 7, and 6 × 9.

Choosing a 120 Film Format

The camera determines the frame dimensions recorded on the roll. Each format changes the number of exposures, the proportions of the photograph, and the way the frame is composed.

Traditional format names are approximate. The actual image area is usually slightly smaller than the stated dimensions.

6 × 6 produces twelve square photographs.

Without a fixed horizontal or vertical orientation, the square frame directs attention toward balance, spacing, and the relationship between forms. The center carries visual weight, while the corners and edges remain equally involved in the composition.

6 × 9 produces approximately eight photographs per roll.

Other cameras may use formats such as 6 × 8, 6 × 12, or wider panoramic variations. Each offers a different relationship between negative area, frame count, and composition.

Types of Medium Format Film Cameras

Medium format cameras use several viewing and focusing systems. Each creates a different relationship between the photographer, the subject, and the frame.

Twin-Lens Reflex Cameras

A twin-lens reflex camera, or TLR, uses two vertically aligned lenses. The upper lens forms the viewfinder image, while the lower lens exposes the film.

The photographer usually composes from above through a waist-level finder. Because the camera does not need to remain directly in front of the face, portrait sessions can feel less confrontational.

With no reflex mirror moving during exposure, many TLR cameras operate quietly and with little internal vibration.

The finder image is generally reversed from left to right, which requires practice when adjusting composition or following movement. Many TLR cameras also use a fixed lens. At close distances, the separation between the viewing and taking lenses may create a small difference between the viewed and recorded image.

Single-Lens Reflex Cameras

A medium format single-lens reflex camera uses the taking lens for both viewing and exposure.

A mirror directs the image toward a waist-level finder or eye-level prism. When the shutter is released, the mirror moves out of the film path.

Viewing through the taking lens makes precise focus, close-up work, filtration, and depth-of-field assessment more direct.

Many medium format SLR systems support interchangeable lenses, finders, focusing screens, and film magazines. A waist-level finder favors a more observational style of framing, while an eye-level prism may feel more natural when following movement.

Rangefinder Cameras

A medium format rangefinder uses a separate optical viewfinder and a coupled focusing mechanism.

Focus is set by aligning two images within a central patch. Without a reflex mirror, the camera can be relatively compact and quiet.

The clear eye-level view suits travel, documentary photography, and environmental portraiture. Some designs also show part of the scene outside the final frame, helping the photographer anticipate movement.

Modular Medium Format Systems

The frame format determines the proportions of the photograph and the number of exposures on each roll. A 645 camera provides more frames and a familiar rectangle. A 6 × 6 camera creates a square composition. Larger formats provide more negative area but fewer exposures.

Choosing and Shooting Your First Roll of 120 Film

A first roll involves three practical decisions: which film to use, how to load it, and how it will be processed.

Choosing a Film Stock

Color negative film is commonly processed using C-41 chemistry. It generally provides useful exposure latitude and is widely supported by laboratories.

Black-and-white negative film emphasizes light, form, texture, and tonal structure. It can be processed professionally or developed at home with suitable equipment and chemistry.

Color transparency film, also called slide film, produces a positive image that can be viewed directly. It usually requires more precise exposure than color negative film.

For a first roll, choose a film that can be processed reliably by the laboratory you intend to use. Select an ISO suited to the expected light and to the shutter speeds and apertures available on the camera.

Loading and Exposing the Roll

Loading procedures vary, so the camera manual should remain the primary reference.

A typical process is:

  1. Load the camera away from strong direct sunlight.

  2. Place the fresh roll in the supply position.

  3. Move an empty spool to the take-up side if required.

  4. Draw the backing-paper leader across the film path.

  5. Insert it securely into the take-up spool.

  6. Wind while maintaining even tension.

  7. Align the start arrow with the camera’s loading mark.

  8. Close the back or film magazine.

  9. Advance to frame one.

Finishing and Unloading the Roll

120 film does not rewind into its original spool.

After the final exposure, continue advancing until the film and backing paper have transferred fully onto the take-up spool. The paper wraps around the exposed film and protects it from light.

Remove the roll away from strong direct sunlight, keep it tightly wound, and secure it using the attached sealing strip.

The empty supply spool becomes the take-up spool for the next roll.

Label the exposed roll with the film type, ISO, date, camera, and project before sending it for processing.

Developing, Scanning, and Printing 120 Film

Development reveals the image recorded on the film. Scanning or darkroom printing determines how that image is presented.

Before sending a roll to a laboratory, confirm that it accepts 120 film and supports the required process:

  • C-41 for most color negative films;

  • black-and-white processing for monochrome films;

  • E-6 for most color transparency films.

A standard scan may be sufficient for review and online use. A higher-resolution scan provides more flexibility for editing, cropping, and printing.

Scanner focus, optics, resolution, film flatness, dust removal, color conversion, and operator decisions all affect the digital file. A basic scan may not reveal all the detail and tonal information held in the negative.

Digital editing is a normal part of a hybrid workflow. Exposure, color, contrast, dust, cropping, and local adjustments can be refined after scanning.

Store negatives in clearly labeled archival sleeves. The physical film remains the original record and can be scanned or printed again.

Optical darkroom printing and digital printing from a scan offer different interpretations of the same negative. Both involve decisions about contrast, tone, scale, paper, and presentation.

The Ongoing Cost of Medium Format Film Photography

The investment in medium format film photography extends beyond the camera. It includes film, processing, scanning or printing, archival storage, shipping where required, and periodic maintenance.

Because a roll of 120 provides fewer exposures than a roll of 35mm film, the cost per photograph is generally higher. The total depends on the film stock, frame format, laboratory, scan quality, and printing requirements.

Home development can reduce some laboratory costs, particularly for black-and-white film, but requires equipment, chemistry, space, and a consistent method.

Older cameras may also need periodic servicing. Shutters, film magazines, advance mechanisms, seals, and focusing components benefit from maintenance by an experienced technician.

In return, the photographer retains an original negative that can be stored, revisited, rescanned, or printed again.

A Digital Continuation of the Hasselblad Film System

Film and digital capture can be understood as different recording methods within the same modular tradition.

The Hasselblad V System was designed around interchangeable components. Its film magazine could be removed while the body, lens, finder, and focusing screen remained in place.
